The Lady Who Doesn't Eat Dinner

I may soon have a new moniker since my new almost job is a weird shift, noon to 8:45pm.

I'm feeling all weirded out, because I've been job hunting for so long and this is the first time I've had a second call back for anything. Things are moving really fast too. The possible boss dude called me Friday to interview yesterday and then called me again 2 hours after my interview to come back in today to meet with the rest of his team and sit in and observe some of the work they do.

Noon to 8:45pm.

I'm trying to reconcile this shift. It's non- negotiable and it's not rotated with any of the other team members.

Why it may suck:

  • I won't be able to cook dinner every night.
  • By the time I get home it will be almost time for bed.
  • I won't be able to do stuff in the evenings on week nights, like go to the theater or out to dinner. (Yes, because we do these things sooo frequently now...)
  • It's kind of a step down career wise from my previous job.
  • I will be kicked back out into the world and forced among people again.
  • I will no longer be a lady of leisure.
  • I will have bathe and put on clothes every day.
  • Since I would be surrounded by other people, I will no longer be able to amuse myself by farting and belching really loud whenever I feel like it and then giggling to myself. Technically, I suppose I could still keep doing it, but I would really like to be a team player and for the other people to like me.
  • I'll have to shave my legs sometimes.
  • I will have less time to spend with MDH.
On the bright side:

  • I will have to spend less time with MDH.
  • It's a job.
  • The money is very good and in fact much better than what I was making before when I was traveling all over hell's half acre.
  • I'll get to sleep in my own bed every night.
  • We may lose weight since I'm not cooking dinner every night.
  • I'll have time to work out every day before work.
  • I'll have the option of sleeping in should the mood strike me.
  • I won't have to deal with rush hour traffic.
  • Showering and getting dressed every day and not giggling at my own loud flatulence may improve my sex life.
  • It seems like very easy work compared to what I was doing before.
  • I will be forced back into the world and out among people again, providing me with an never ending supply of blog fodder.
  • It's a job.
  • I can buy shoes again. (DSW, here I come!)
  • I can buy potions again. (I'm sure Lancome and Keihls have missed me.)
  • We can finally get a goddamn house keeper.
  • We're finally going to buy some living room furniture.

I'm almost not wanting to publish this for fear I will jinx myself. It would just be so perfect to not get the job after having raved, worried and typed out these idiotic lists like a big jackass. Please remind me that I'm not superstitious, but keep your fingers crossed that I get this stupid job. Lady would like to buy some shoes.

Fingers are crossed! I worked weird hours for years, and I liked it, except for the Sundays and holidays. If you don't have to work Sundays and holidays, noon to 8 or so shouldn't be bad!

Is this a Mon-Fri gig? I think not going in at noon so you can do other things like sleep, work out, relax and have coffee as opposed to rush out the door and have coffee are all splendid things indeed.

Not spending the evenings with MDH would be kinda sucky but I realize that mine and P's time during the evening ain't that quality. We save quality for the weekend.

I would be careful about sleeping in, as it is my firmly held belief that no relationship can sustain one party sleeping in more than an hour per day more than the other. But you'll avoid rush hour, have some money, and likely lose the craziness that goes with long periods of unemployment, which are all good things. Plus, it's not like you're working a night shift and show up at work just as he's getting home. You'll get used to whatever, and the money will be nice, too.

Those are some weird hours, but...well if you want them shoes.

It is good to know that there are females in this world who belch and fart and are (wo)man enough to admit it.

The one good thing about this shift is you will be avoiding any traffic almost completely. You might have to fight the lunch crowd or the elderly to be somewhere by noon, but the trip home should be a breeze.

You are so fun to read and I loved your plus and minuses on working at 8.45pm. I think it sounds like a cool way to do things!!

Gosh, I'd be skinny if I cut out the hours from 8pm to 11pm. :)

good luck!!

I am sending you some good luck vibes! I only work that shift once a week. The sleeping-in part is a bonus, plus I can use that time if I haven't slept it all away to run to the bank or post office or whatevah. I don't like staying late, though.

Good luck if that's what you want. But noon-8:45??? I don't think I could work those hours.

I had a love hate w/ this shift. I loved sleeping in, but hated not being home by 6.

I liked going out w/ friends at the bar and waking up late, but I ended up gaining about 15 lbs till I figured it all out.

Sounds like you might go bonkers if you don't do something.

The one question I have..Is it a resume builder or "filler"??? That is what only you can determine.

No employeer I know looks down on a person for feeding the family. Especially in a recession...step down or not.
Says alot about a person. Sounds to me like the lady who doesn't lunch has a hard work ethic!!!

Good luck with the job! The hours aren't that weird.

CDP - Thanks! At this point I'm taking the job if they offer it - weird hours or not - I need a job.

SRU - it's Mon-Fri and then on rotating on-call. MDH and I will be fine - although I do worry about his eating habits when I'm not around.

Pistols - I'm planning to keep my normal schedule of getting up and going to bed with MDH. You're totally right too - I'm going bananas here at home by myself all the time.

Evil - I'm a total disgusting pig when no one is looking and a perfectly nice lady the rest of the time. To see me in my Tiffany jewelry, cashmere and tweed you'd never know that I'm a gaseous weiner.

Betty - Thanks darlin' I love your blog too! I'll never be skinny no matter how many meals I skip, but it'll be exciting to change things up a bit around here.

Tara - thanks for the vibes!! I don't quite understand why the crappy shift isn't rotated like the crappy shift every place else I've worked that had a crappy shift. Seems unfair and also based on what they've told me the main reason for turn over in the position.

BSUWG - I'd have a bigger problem with it and probably turn it down if I had kids.

Superstar - I have had a job since I was 12 years old and my mother put a ton of make-up on my face, lied and said I was 16 so that I could make and give out cupcakes to sell microwaves in her appliance store where she worked. I've been supporting myself since I was 18. I've never not worked since then, so this whole experience, even though it was planned with, supported and funded by MDH has been BIZARRE!

It's definitely "filler" and not "builder", but what else can I do? I plan to keep looking for another job, although I feel kinda skuzzy about it, but the noon to 8:45 hours make it ideal for just such a thing. Besides I may suprise myself and love it.

I've got my fingers crossed!

When I decided to leave teaching and go back to school to try to get a Pharmacy degree, I made the decision to go back to waitering full time-- it was the only thing that made sense as far as cash flow, juggling schedule, etc. And it means working nights. The short term can be difficult, but the long term-- a job I can work into old age and make a great living, meaning we can pay for our kids' college and retire someday still.

And just a comment about working-- it's funny how when you are working, the work comes to you. Expect a few more job offers down the pike soon.

Crossing many fingers.

It is *weird* shift though...but, hey, you can sleep in. And that's worth something.

Good luck, good luck, good luck.

I like those hours missy! I am at my most productive in the evenings so it's perfect. And I'm unabashedly, totally and completely NOT a morning person (no, really!) so starting at noon? HELL YES! Sign me up for that.

GOOD LUCK!!! So what if it's a tiny step down (as you said) you don't have to stay there forever. Once you're in a job it's so much easier to move to another one. You're just reconnecting your skills until the work force is ready to handle your awesomeness. Yay!

If I didn't have kids, that would be a perfect schedule for me. I'm just not a morning person.

SO, having grown up in Southeast MI and having lots of family still there, it is very encouraging to me to have someone actually FIND a job instead of LOSE their job. You probably are not in the SE, but even still...I hope it works out for you...if that is what you are hoping for.

I worked a 3-11 shift for 3 years. It wasn't too bad. Lots of time to myself, good pay, not as much work as days. 12-8:45 is better, I think.
